ROCCO B. COMMISSO SOCCER STADIUM - Facilities - Columbia University Athletics


Baker Athletic Complex aka Bakersfield aka Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium located on 218th Street off Broadway is the home to Columbia University's Mens and Women's soccer teams. This field is located on the most northern neighborhood in Manhattan, right across from the Marble Hill Section of the Bronx. 

You can take the A train to 207 and walk north up broadway till 218th street and take a left on Broadway. Or you can take the 1 train to 215th Street which is a bit closer and walk a few blocks north to 218th and then take a left on Broadway. 

The field is most likely not available to the public during Columbia's season from late summer through Fall. It is also tough to use during the winter as they put up a bubble on this field so there can be indoor practice for the Columbia Sports teams. However, if you go during the Spring and parts of the summer it is likely you have a chance of practicing. 

Don't expect there to be pickup though as this is considered a private field and less known for pickup. Mostly organized travel teams play here. If you go to the football field which is almost right next to this field, it has a nice turf field and goals to use as well and this field is usually open to use all year round. There are occasional times when football or lacrosse games are held but for the most part one of these two fields will be open to train on or play with some friends.

137th Street Soccer

       Located between Amsterdam Ave and 136th Street, seconds away from City College, lies Jacob H. Schiff Playground. This park has a nice sized turf soccer pitch with multiple goals and colorful street murals along the side of the wall.  In the neighborhood of Harlem, this field attracts a diverse crowd of players and spectators. Usually there are smaller pickup games during the week that take up half the field. If you are looking to train alone or with a friend or two there is some space on the sideline however I would recommend getting there earlier in the day. The afternoons can usually get pretty busy and this isn’t the largest field.  On the weekends is when I usually tend to play here. There are more organized pickup games on the weekend mornings so unless you are on a team already or know someone I wouldn’t recommend coming weekend mornings unless you just want to watch.

New Soccer Field in Washington Heights

                                                                                                                               New Soccer Field in Washington Heights This beautiful new soccer field opened up last month on 175th Street and Amsterdam, in the vibrant and bustling Washington Heights neighborhood. The field is open to the public with new turf, goals and benches being added.            The field is perfect for solo training, small sided games or simply for getting in some running along the sidelines. The field is truly the perfect size and looks incredible.            It is another hidden gem that has popped up recently in the Heights only a year after the street pitch further west in Jhood Park (view previous post) was created. This pitch is nicer for people looking to get a grass feel and wear proper cleats. It is also more spacious but still contained rather nice. Get out and enjoy this new field while the nice weather lasts!
